What is the cost to remodel a kitchen? This is often the first thing homeowners want to know after deciding they want a new kitchen.
Most home homeowners understand that a kitchen’s size, material and product selections, and other things affect the cost of their kitchen remodel.
The cost to remodel a kitchen in our area varies by type of kitchen. Below you will find the typical cost ranges* to remodel six kitchens. Three types of mid-range kitchens and three types of upscale kitchens. You will see why the cost to remodel a kitchen is different for each.
Typical Cost to Remodel Mid-Range Kitchens
A mid-range kitchen is one that has products and finishes above an economy or budget kitchen, but below those of a high-end kitchen.
Same floor plan: The cost to remodel a mid-range kitchen that doesn’t change the floor plan, is about 265 sq ft, has new floors, semi-custom cabinets, granite counters, lighting, and new appliances typically costs $46,000 to $56,000.
Different floor plan in same space: The mid-range kitchen cost, the same size but with a different floor plan but keeping the walls, doors, and windows, will generally cost $48,000 to $58,000. The higher cost is because a new kitchen design and layout must be developed and the location of the plumbing, gas, and electric must be changed.
New mid-range kitchen with a modest change in size, new configuration and modifications to walls and doors: For this mid-range kitchen, the cost range is greater because of the kitchen’s structural changes add more variables. Typically, costs will run from $56,000 to $70,000.
Typical Costs to Remodel Up-Scale Kitchens
Same floor plan: The cost to remodel a high-end kitchen, keeping its original plan, is around 400 sq ft, has new high-end flooring, cabinetry, countertops, lighting, appliances, and so on typically costs $75,000 to $120,000.
Different floor plan in same space: An upscale kitchen remodel using a new floor plan, but keeps the kitchen’s original footprint, is about 400 sq ft costs more than the “same floor plan” kitchen for two reasons. First, a new kitchen design and layout must be developed. Secondly, because the location of utilities need to be changed. So, the cost to remodel a kitchen like this is typically $90,000 to $120,000.
New upscale kitchen with a 25% change in size, changes to the walls and doors, and uses a new a new configuration: This type kitchen can have a dramatically different cost range from high to low because when changing the size, you get into making more structural changes to the home. However, typically these kitchens cost between $90,000 and $140,000 to remodel.
